The capital of Versilia, it is a centre for marble and bronze work of international importance, a destination for sculptors from all over the world.

It takes its name from the fort that stands in the centre of the city and the marble that was transported from the Apuan Alps to the wharf to then take the sea route.

It is a city famous throughout the world for its walls that have preserved it like a treasure chest since the 16th century. Among its streets you can discover antique dealers, art galleries, craft workshops and countless monuments and churches. It is home to the Summer Festival.

Famous throughout the world for its Piazza dei Miracoli, with the Leaning Tower, it is a city rich in history and home to one of Italy's most prestigious universities.

Peaks, valleys and forests draw an Alpine landscape and in little more than half an hour from Viareggio one can find oneself in the tranquillity of these places, perhaps after a dip in the sea. For those who would like to treat themselves to an invigorating trip off the coast, the Apuan Alps and its historic villages are a destination not to be missed and an opportunity to get to know Versilia better.

They are one of the main tourist attractions of the La Spezia Riviera, with the five villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. They can be reached from Viareggio, during the summer period, by convenient daily ferries.
